This section will be continuously updated. If you have a question and do not see it listed here, please submit it on this thread.
Q: What is Geocaching?
A: Geocaching is an outdoor treasure-hunting game in which the participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver, GPS enabled phone or other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers (called "geocaches" or "caches") anywhere in the world. A typical cache is a small waterproof container containing a logbook and "treasure," usually toys or trinkets of little value. Geocaches can found all over the world.
Q: What is the GCGC?
A: The GCGC is the Greater Charlotte Geocaching Club formed in June 2008, and the only membership requirement is that you go out and have fun geocaching in the greater Charlotte area! Of course we would encourage you to attend our next event.
We will have events scheduled from time to time that will allow us to give back to the community and to raise awareness of the great sport of geocaching. These events will include C.I.T.O. events as well as community scavenger hunts and charity-based gatherings.
We encourage you to get outdoors and find some awesome caches in the greater Charlotte area and become involved in the GCGC as we cache into the future!
Q: What do my donations go to fund?
Q: What do the profits earned from my GCGC purchases go to?
A: This site is mostly free but there are costs in running the GCGC. We hope to maintain the Charlottegeocaching.com address. To do this we will incur costs to both keep the domain and redirect the old forum to this one. Those costs are minimul in comparison to the old site. We also purchase the Geocoins and trackables that are awarded as prizes in contests. The production of these coins is an additional cost even when we sell them to members. We Also try to participate in local town events to promote the GCGC and Geocaching. Giveaways and signage at these events are usually donated but not every time. Be assured that any funds generated by these methods will be turned back to the GCGC community. Lackeys recieve no pay for anything they do.
Q:Where do I get the GCGC banner to add to my cache pages?
A: See the Gallery section in the forum. There you will find several to choose from. Use the appropriate html code or option on the cache submission form to add the banner.
Q: Sometimes I need help finding a cache. Is there anyone I can call when I'm out caching?
Q: What is a PAF list
Q: How do I get on the list?
A: PAF stands for Phone A Friend. We here, at the GCGC, have a group of geocachers that are on a phone list for the inevitable situation when you are at a cache location and need an extra hint. Pull up the phone list for a cacher that you know has found the one you are looking for or someone you think may be able to help by being your online eyes to the cache page for reading of the description or clue once more. If you would like to be a part of the ever growing list, open your profile and petition for entry under the groups tab. You must provide a Lackey with your phone number so that it can be entered in the list. Only those willing to be on the list themselves are permitted to view it by being included in the Phone a Friend group.
Q: How do I post a link with a cool name instead of all that gibberish?
A: This is by far, easier than you think. The code is simple, but different where used.
For BBC Code: (mostly used on this site)
[*url= or website address here]cool name here[*/url]
For HTML Code: (for use on webpages)
<*a href=" or website address here">cool name here</*a>
Replace all items in red with the listed replacements and remove all * from the code
Q: Im using a public computer and log in to the GCGC. Now how do I log out so my profile is not used by someone else.
A: Make sure you do not allow the web browser you are using to remember your password and ALWAYS make sure you click on the "LOGOUT" button along the top links line when you are about to walk away from the computer.
Q: How to add my Geocaching statbar
The GC statbar does not currently work on this forum, reason unknown. Ranger Fox's statbar link does not currently resolve. Other statbars appear to work fine
A: Click your own name and go to edit profile. After you are on your forum profile page, make changes by clicking the appropriate tab and uploading or changeing the text to be displayed, adding your stat bar will go in the "signature" section. To get your personal statbar go to www.geocaching.com/my/statbar.aspx when logged into geocaching.com. This should bring up your personal statbar page and simple instructions on copying the code to use.
For advanced users (and those wishing to try), you can visit Ranger Fox's Statbar generator page which can insert special images, icons and your own logo (directions how to on the site) and insert the generated code in the "signature"section. To visit his site, go to www.devfolio.com/geocaching/statbar/index.aspx
Statbars may also be obtained from Opencaching.us and Munzee. Visit their sites for instructions on obtaining the statbar.
Copy and past the code generated / provided into your signature on your profile page.
Q: How do I change my Avatar
A: Visit your large profile page. There you will find several options including use of the default image, selecting one of the provided images, creating a custom cartoon like image or uploading your own.
Q: What is a GCGC Cache, Relay or Theme?
A: A GCGC cache is a Relay cache and part of our ongoing ideas to make geocaching more fun in and around the Charlotte area. You can read more information by going to the GCGC Relay / Contests board. There you will find the rules for any current contest then simply join in. There will also be an announcement posted (usually in several places) for both current and upcoming contests.
Q: How can I view the GCGC in the wild?
A: The website forum is also mobile friendly. Open the forum in your browser and it will load in the mobile format (you can revert to desktop at the bottom)
TapaTalk is a free app that is also compatable with the GCGC. In addition to a mobile friendly view on the small screen it also has notifications and an easy photo upload.
Q: What is VRC?
A: VRC is Virtually Real Caching. A GCGC only game where you use Google Streetview to find virtual caches for a find and then if you want you can make a REAL find with your own marker for a second find on the location. There are also TimeTravel VRC's where you use the multiple time photos in Streetview to make a find and AnyWhere VRC's where you find a subject anywhere in streetview for a find.
This is a GCGC Only game that allows you to cache at home when you can not get out and then cache in real life when you can.
Contests are designed so that even late entrants have a chance to win. Increase your chances by participating more. The points winner is not necessarily the overall winner in most cases, they just have a better chance. There is typically one thread for the contest participants to enter their scoring finds and another for smack talk and questions. Please respect the rules and maintain thread integrity by posting in the correct thread.
