When I was working on the idea I could not see a way to allow schoolyard picks of teams that had any chance of balance.
Family and usual caching buddies would want to cluster creating a swarm of points if they went out together completely overwhelming the opposition. Then who gets left out? That wierd guy or the new member that has no member friends?
With predetermined teams it had a chance to break up those that already cached together putting them with others to make new ties. Everyone would be selected for a team. The team overall membership number would be roughly equal. Those that hadn't participated might play along since they were already on a team. Old and new members, near and far members, active and inactive members were all included in selection making it more random to even out the teams in skill, previous find totals and participation.
The problem was participation level. I would have rather seen less individual points and more team totals but that is not what happened. One side had the advantage of newer more active participants than the other with the few active participants on the other team locked out of some areas due to previous finds.
More and smaller teams might have worked but again that would require more participants. It would allow previously formed groups that like to cache together to team up. Then too it would have created an even more complicated game with more targets and teams. I thought about something like this with a single target attacked by all teams but that would have been more like the previous games with a targeted cache with larger groups acting as an individual.
