I had too much time on my hands, so I researched the numbers for all of North Carolina!
TABLE IS CURRENT AS OF 11/18/2019.
Interesting Facts:
- The best year was 2012 with 5,065 caches hidden. Only 2007 comes close, and was the only other year with more than 5,000 cache hides.
- 2019 has been the worst year for caches hidden since 2003, we still have 2 months left in 2019 though.
- The NC Caching Boom of 2006-2007 catapulted us into the golden age of Geocaching for the area, with 9 straight years of 3,000+ caches hidden from 2007-2014.
- The First Ever (Logged Online) Geocache Find in NC was by mr_spexarth on Octopus Garden on 10/20/2000. This was also his only ever find, and he never visited the site again after logging this find.
- The 1st Traditional Cache in NC was The Treasure Trove, hidden on 12/12/2000 by Simon Jester. Unfortunately this one was archived in mid-2002.
- The 1st Multi-Cache in NC was Beavers Playground, hidden on 1/15/2001 by Buddhavista. This one is still active.
- The 1st Mystery Cache in NC was of course Octopus Garden, hidden on 9/30/2000 by AdventureTom. This one is still active.
- The 1st Virtual Cache in NC was Occoneechee Cave Dweller, hidden on 3/11/2001 by egw@mebtel.net. This one was archived in mid-2006.
- The 1st Letterbox Hybrid in NC was Fabulous, Fantastic Fire Tower Friday, hidden on 7/11/2003 Tellico Gap, Magnolia Bud, and Eagle Eye. This one is still active.
- The 1st Wherigo in NC was Tour de Greensboro, hidden on 4/9/2008 by Ranger Fox. This one is still active.
- The 1st EarthCache in NC was NC Geology #1: Paleo Pavement Earthcache, hidden on 7/6/2002 by Geologygirl (aka GneissTuff&Wacky). It's still active.
- The 1st Webcam in NC was a tie between Catamount Cache-cam and Sun n' Surf "Cache-cam" both hidden on 10/31/2001 by CrotalusRex (of T.S.M.Ex.T). These are both still active, but who knows for how long.
- The 1st Event in NC was Charlotte Geocaching Picnic and Hunt on 9/30/2001 and was hosted by Snowtrail.
- The 100th Cache in NC was GREENWAY ??, hidden on 7/25/2001 by DangeRas Dave. It was archived in mid-2003.
- The 500th Cache in NC was Top of The Smokies Virtual Picture Cache, hidden on 8/25/2002 by Rocky&Bullwinkle. This Virtual Cache is still active today!
- The 1,000th Cache in NC was Old Brunswick Town, hidden on 7/18/2003 by bookiew & Geotigger & bigdaddy757. This Virtual is also still active today!
- The 5,000th Cache in NC was Water View, hidden on 11/24/2005 by Team LegaSea. This Multi-Cache was unfortunately archived less than a year after publication in mid-2006.
