Should I log a DNF?
Yes. Simply yes, most every time.
You found yourself near a cache or you planned an outing to find a cache.
You looked for it. You checked for a hint. You even checked the logs for another clue as to where to find it and still you didn't find it.
LOG A DNF.
No question. You did not find it. A DNF is in order.
You stopped by one that was nearby. Took a cursory look around. Didn't see anything that looked like a cache.
LOG A DNF
While you put little effort into it, a DNF should be logged. You might want to explain you limited time for searching but a DNF is still the right thing to do.
You spent a great deal of time looking for this cache and didn't find it.
LOG A DNF
You're back again having already logged a DNF in the past. You look around again and come up with nothing.
LOG A DNF
While I myself will only log the first three attempts, I do log any subsequent searches in groups. "Hey, I've looked for this a couple more times and I'm still coming up with nothing"
Sometimes I make the find on the 5th trip out. I will still indicate that I made 2 attempts prior to my actual find in the FIND log.
This one is more rare. You finally found it but you are unable to access the log. Part of the cache is fiquring out how to gain access to the log. It is a physical puzzle to get it out or otherwise gain access. You didn't sign the log because you didn't find a way to actually sign the log.. According to the general rules and ethics you have not yet FOUND the cache.
LOG A DNF
This happens too. You find the more than obvious placce that it should have been. You found nothing. There is no place else that it could be. Maybe you found parts or a clue that this is the exact spot it is or should be. Still you did not find what the CO placed.
LOG A DNF
Do not place a replacement container or log where YOU think it should have been. You could be wrong.
Why log the DNF?
The obvious reason is to alert the CO that there may be a problem.
The cache has gone missing.
Somethng has changed at the site that they me be unaware of.
It's a difficult cache to find and I tried.
It's an easy cache and I am just new at the game.
Either way the CO gets a log. (they want logs of all types) and they can determine how to react based on your experience at caching and what you say in that log.
Do they need to check on it?
Has it gone missing?
Are you just new and don't expect what they hid?
Is this a particularly difficult to find cache for all levels of experience?
That is something for them to determine but they have no idea that you looked for it if you don't enter a log.
I have some difficult to find caches and expect that you will not find it. neither will the next to seach.
But I don't know you tried if you don't log a DNF.
Likewise I have some that are easy to find and expect most to find it except maybe a new cacher because the whole thing is new to them.
A DNF tells me that there may be a problem or that this is a new cacher and they have yet to find something similar. *yea we check to see what you have found in the past sometimes)
My advice is to log every DNF no matter how well you searched.
It helps the CO
It adds to your DNF to Find ratio for joining the DNF Club on the GC (see rvstauff for reguirements to join)
You will appreciate the statistics later in your caching career.
I know it sounds like you admitting defeat but that is part of the game
Own up to it. There are caches that we all did not find and should have or ..maybe not because they were difficult
