Take a look around. It can be overwhelming with all these posts.
Start with the New Member Introduction Tell us something about you and your interests.
Check out the Did You Know section. There you will find tips and tricks for site features and how to cleanup the forum so that you will see the newest posts and more once you have have taken in what you can tolerate and want to settle in.
Go to your Profile (tab in the menu bar). Set up your profile with your own avatar. There are pre-made ones, cartoon characters designed by you or upload your own.
Be sure to answer the questions about where you are and what you participate in.
Set up your notifications to keep up between visits. There were tips on notifications in the Did You Know section that you have already looked at.
Set your Pin in the Map. (again in the Did You Know section) Place a pin at or near your location. This shows where you are in relation to the core GCGC area. It helps members find nearby members to join up with on cache hunts and lets us know where our members are for our activities. It doesn't need to be on your house if you are concerned but someplace nearby is helpful. Avoid metro centers but an intersection nearby, in the street, maybe where you work if you cache from there. Your comfort level may vary. Only members can see the map for a bit more security.
Read posts that might be of interest and those that may not be.
Find somethng to comment on or Like.
There is a lot here, some old and some new. Nobody expects you to read it all but do look around.
Join whatever Contest is currently active. There is usually at least one going much of the year. Occasonally there is not but one is likely to pop up so don't miss it.
Start with the first post in a contest. There you will find the overall game and the rules that bind us all.
They always have simplified instructions and an example of how to play in an attempt to make it easy for you to start.
If you still don't quite understand post a question in the Contest Disscussion board (usually the thread before or after the contest rules)
Figure out what you need to do and give it a try.
There is usually a unique banner on the main board for the contest to make it easy to find.
Watch the Shoutbox. It's on the right or at the bottom depending on where you are in the forum.
Use it to Shout at members while online or leave them a quick message for when they return.
Also on the right side is the Previous Contest, Current Contest and sometimes the Next Contest.
Currently there is also the Challenge that is open to all members. A lesser contest of sorts.
Most of all, Find something that you are interested in talking about and make a comment or ask a question.
This site lives on the conversations that you generate.
If you don't see something you want to talk about add it.
Just find a section that seems to be along the lines of your topic and hit the Create Thread at the top right of the topic and start a new conversation.
Just maybe someone else will find it of interest and post a comment.
While the contests are the thing that brings many back to see how they are progressing, The conversations are what keeps the site active.
